JH Falcon Track and Field athletes competed in the Great Hearts Championship Meet at Apollo High School on Saturday. April 28th. Thrower Alexandra Costarella took a silver medal in the shot put and a bronze in the discus. Kailyn Banks went to the finals in the 100m Hurdles, placing 4th overall. Grace Chapman also made the final round of shot put, with a 9th place finish. “All the athletes worked really hard all season, and it was great to see their dedication pay off in the final meet,” said Coach Johnson.
The junior high Track & Field team competed in its last regular season meet on Friday, April 20th at Apollo HS. Kailyn Banks continued her unbroken streak of wins in the hurdles with an 18.47. Banks and Hope Carney finished 4th and 5th in the 100m, with PR times of 14.15 and 14.34, both qualifying for the championship meet. Carney also PR’d and qualified in the 200m. Alicia Flannery shaved nearly 8 seconds off her her previous best in the 800m and added about 5 feet to her long jump PR. Sam Garlick PR’d in the hurdles with a 19.40 in a sixth place overall finish. “Our championship meet is a week away, and I am proud to say that nearly half the team will have qualified to participate. I am expecting some amazing finishes as well as some medals being brought home to North Pointe on Saturday,” said Coach Johnson.
JH Track & Field performed well in its meet at Apollo HS. Kailyn Banks took first in the Hurdles for the fourth consecutive time, running a 14.31. Alexandra Costarella placed first in the Shot Put and second in the Discus, improving her personal record by over 11 feet, with a throw of 70’5”. Grace Chapman also PR’d in the Shot put, throwing 24’9.75”, taking third place overall. Alicia Flannery shaved 7 seconds off her PR in the 800m, advancing in the ranks and moving closer to qualifying for the Championship meet. Sam Garlick and Frank Banister improves their times in the 800m, with Sam also PR’ing in Hurdles with a time of 20.06. “These athletes are working hard and improving consistently with each meet. I expect good things at our last regular meet next week and even better things in the Championship,” said Coach Johnson.
On Saturday, April 6th, JH Track & Field competed in the Great Hearts West Valley Meet at Apollo High School. For the third consecutive time, Kailyn Banks placed first in the 100m Hurdles, with a time of 18.5 seconds. Hope Carney set PR of 31.26, taking first place in the 200m. Alexandra Costarella took first in both the discus and shot put, setting new PRs in both events and automatically qualifying for the championship meet. Sam Garlick and Frank Bannister both set PRs in the 800m, while Timothy McCoy PR’d in all four of his events. “We are halfway through the season and already have several athletes qualified or poised to qualify for the final championship meet. I am extremely proud of the hard work these student athletes have done to get themselves to this point,” said Coach Johnson.
Jr High Track & Field competed in its second meet of the season at Apollo High School. Kailyn Banks once again took 1st in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 18:44. Alexandra Costarella and Grace Chapman took first and second place in the shot put, Costarella throwing 27′ 9 3/4″ and Chapman throwing a PR of 22′ 11″. Costarella also took second place in the discus. Kiera Carpenter finished in the top 6 with PRs in both the long jump (10’10”) and the triple jump (20′ 11″). For the boys’ team, Timothy McCoy PR’d in both the long jump (9’5″) and the Hurdles (24:70). Sam Garlick also PR’d in the 800m, taking 17 seconds off his previous best, with a run of 3:20:78. “This is solid improvement on the part of many athletes, and I am confident it is just going to keep getting better as the season goes on,” said Coach Johnson.
Jr High Track & Field competed in its first meet of the season Sat 3/3/18 at Odyssey. Hope Carney tied for 1st place in the 100m, with a PR time of 14:40. Kailyn Banks also took 1st in the Hurdles, besting her championship time from last year with an 18:31. First time thrower Alexandra Costarella finished 1st in the Shot Put (29′ 1/2″) and 2nd in the Discus (44′ 9/10″). On the boys’ side, Frank Bannister finished in the top 8 in his debut attempt at Hurdles with a time of 22:78. “I’m very happy with the results of our first meet and looking forward to improving in the ones that follow” – Coach Johnson.
Six members of the Jr. High Track and Field team competed in the Great Hearts Championship Meet at Camelback High School. Kailyn Banks took a silver medal in the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.7 seconds. Chris Kohly advanced to the medal round in the shot put, throwing a PR of 28’1″. Grace Chapman also PR’d in the shot with a throw of 20’3″. “The athletes worked really hard to get to this meet, and I am proud of every single one,” said Coach Johnson.
