The competition cheer team competed this past weekend at the United Spirit Association Estrella Foothills Regional Competition. This is one of many qualifying regional events on the west coast to attend the largest Nationals on the west coast. In order to qualify for USA Nationals teams must score an average of 75 points to receive a bid. North Pointe cheer has not qualified for a Nationals is several years and it was one of our team’s goals this season to qualify for Nationals. We were just coming off of our State qualifier competition the week before, and had to once again get our minds focused on our goal. We had just one practice with everyone due to injured athletes. None the less the team came together when they stepped onto the big blue competition mat. Once the music started the routine came to life and was much sharper and cleaner than their last performance. The team stepped off of the mat with smiles on their faces as they knew they had just hit a solid routine. Now it was time to wait for awards. We heard our name called and received our first place trophy, but we did not hear them announce our name for Nationals. We left awards thinking we did not qualify for nationals. Upon receiving our score sheets we were thrilled to see our certificate and invitation to attend the 2016 USA National Competition. The announcers simply forgot to announce our name when we received our trophy. “The team’s average score was 5 points higher than it was the previous weekend proving that when we can hit clean, sharp routines we will be rewarded. The team’s new goals are to keep improving their skills on the road to the State championships, and to attend the USA Nationals in California this March,” said Coach Messana.
